World Asthma Day Celebrations at KRIMS Hospitals

On the occasion of World Asthma Day, KRIMS Hospitals organized an Asthma Education Program on the 1st of May 2018. The Department of Pulmonology of KRIMS Hospitals will be celebrating the Asthma Awareness Month to raise awareness about the health consequences of asthma and the asthma treatment. Dr. Sameer Arbat, Consultant Pulmonologist educated the audience including more than 60 people on the topic of ‘How to Control Asthma. The attendees included the patients and their relatives who were invited for the education program.

This year’s  World Asthma Day theme by WHO is ‘Never Too Early, Never Too Late-It’s always the right time to address airways disease’. There are an estimated 300 million asthmatic patients worldwide with 1/10th of those living in India. A recent review analysis of 15 epidemiological studies showed that the mean prevalence of asthma among children was 7.24%. Dr. Sameer in his talk mentioned about the triggering factors of Asthma and how to avoid them. He demonstrated the inhaler techniques and stressed about the importance of correct inhaler technique.”Treatment of Asthma is of long duration and most patients discontinue their medication leading to the worsening of the disease. It is important to educate people about Asthma for it ’s better treatment and management of this disease“, commented Dr. Sameer Arbat. Other prominent doctors at the event included Senior Pulmonologist Dr. Ashok Arbat who is one of the best pulmonologist in India and Dr. Meenakshi Ghadge. The program concluded with the distribution of caps to all the patients with the message “You can control your asthma”.

The Department of Pulmonology at KRIMS Hospitals is a pioneer department for respiratory care and caters to around more than a thousand Asthma patients every year and also giving education for asthma. The department has the facility of Spirometry, FeNO and a dedicated respiratory ICU for management of Asthma. Dr. Sameer Arbat conducts an ‘Asthma Education Program’ every Tuesday, free of cost for patients and their relatives. Till now more than two thousand patients have been benefited from this regular activity.

KRIMS Hospitals plans to conduct month-long Asthma awareness activities, which includes Radio Talks and Public Camps during the month of May 2018.
